Back at HoTS for another round of halter, Otachi was once again blowing off steam in one of the back paddocks. Ben had been trying to get the horse to calm down for the last half an hour, while Otachi wasn't showing any signs of stopping his antics.
RESULTS: Groaning in frustration, Ben finally decided he was done. He grabbed Otachi's halter, and pulled him back to the trailer, tying him securely, and sitting down on a nearby hay bale after throwing down his helmet on the ground. He put his head in his hands, sighing heavily. He'd been trying to work with this horse for how long? And it was still no use. He couldn't get the unruly colt to do anything. They'd had some good times, but... it just seemed like everyone else did better with him. Otachi wasn't nearly as wild when one of the stable hands rode him, and the farm's owner could get him to sit still for a vet visit while Ben couldn't. Sure, they had done well at a few shows they'd gone to, but it just wasn't the same. Sitting in his own misery, he almost missed when they called their class - quickly grabbing his helmet, he threw it on, and quickly untied Otachi from the trailer. Quickly clipping a lead shank to Otachi's halter, he dragged the resisting horse to the ring. By the time they got to the ring, Otachi was once again throwing his head in the air, refusing to settle down. Ben noticed the judge was quickly approaching them, and grabbed a tighter hold on the lead rope, stopping Otachi from jumping around. As the judge quickly looked at Otachi, Ben noticed he was holding his breath the whole time, hoping the colt wouldn't suddenly spook. As he finished their final walk out of the quiet grass ring, Otachi gave a startled jump forward - which Ben quickly corrected with a quick tug to Otachi's halter. And if the judges had seen anything, apparently they hadn't noticed - because later that day, Ben was picking up another first place ribbon from the judges' booth. And, honestly, he'd be lying if he said he didn't feel at least a little smug - after all, nobody else had won quite so many ribbons with Otachi, even if they could get him to stand for the farrier.
